The 2012 season promises to be an exciting year for Texas A & M on many different fronts. The Aggies will open up a new chapter in what is already a tradition rich school. That new chapter begins with Texas A&M moving from the Big 12 into the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Aggies will also start the 2012 season with a new head coach. Kevin Sumlin will take over a program that will return 8 offensive and 5 defensive starters. Coach Sumlin has an overall head coaching record of 35-17. He leaves a University of Houston program that led the nation in total offense in 2011. He also brings with him his offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury who called the shots offensively last season. The Aggies will open up there offense and they have a number of weapons to do just that. The strength of the Aggie offense is its offensive line. The entire Aggie offensive line returns intact with Luke Joeckel (OLT), Jarvis Harrison (OLG), Patrick Lewis (OC), Cedric Ogbuehi (ORG), and Jake Matthews (ORT) leading the charges. The line will average 306 lbs per man and it is imperitive that Texas A&M be able to run the ball in the SEC. The starting quarterback will be sophomore Jameill Showers and his main targets will be returning starters Christine Michaels (RB), Ryan Swope (WR) and Uzoma Nwachukwu (WR). Coach Sumlin’s biggest area of concern is the defensive side of the ball. Returning starters on defense are Mamontre Moore (DE), Spencer Nealy (DE), Sean Porter (LB), Jonathan Stewart (LB) and Steven Jenkins (LB). The Aggies cannot afford to be bit by the injury bug on defense. They lack depth especially in the secondary. Coach Sumlin hopes that his sophomore class will step up in this area. The only player with experience in the secondary is senior free safety Steven Campbell and he is truly gifted at that position. Texas A&M definitely possesses enough firepower on offense to be a force in the SEC. The big question is “Can They Do It on a Consistent Basis And Will There Defense Be Up To The Task?”
