In 2011, the Texas Longhorns ended there season with an overall record of 8-5 and 4-5 in Big 12 play. The 2012 edition of the Longhorns is hoping to turn the corner and put themselves back into the National Championship Bowl picture. Head Coach Mack Brown has been in charge of the Longhorns for 14 years and has a record at Texas of 141-39. Texas will return 8 offensive and 7 defensive starters this season. The strength of the Texas offense should be in there offensive backfield and offensive line. Returning on the offensive side of the ball is David Ash (QB), Malcolm Brown (RB), Jaxon Shipley (WR), Mike Davis (WR), Trey Hopkins (OLG), Dominic Espinosa (OC), Mason Walters (ORG) and Josh Cochran (ORT). The Longhorns are hoping to throw Jonathan Gray (RB) in the mix. Gray was the nation’s top running back last year running for 10,908 yards and 205 touchdowns during his career at Aledo High School, Aledo, Texas. Coach Brown is hoping that he can take that production to the next level and team him up with his other 2 running backs. Last years defensive side of the ball was ranked 11th nationally in total defense and Texas is hoping to improve upon that ranking. Returning starters on defense are Jackson Jeffcoat (DE), Alex Okafor (DE), Jordan Hicks (LB), Carrington Byndom (CB), Quandre Diggs (CB), Adrian Philips (SS) and Kenny Vaccaro (FS). The Longhorns will return all 4 starters from there secondary and the bookend defensive ends will also be a force. The problem is at the linebacker position where most of their starters moved on the the professional level. Sophomores and Juniors will have to fill that void. Only time will tell. The last two season’s the Longhorns have been a meager 13-12. If Texas can get consistant productivity from the quarterback position and minimize mistakes, then a 10 win season is a real possibility. If not than the Longhorns could be just another team trying to take the next step.
